Though Roger Harvey came up in Philly’s punk and hardcore circles, his solo output this year is strictly rooted in folk and Americana, pushing for a scene rooted in community rather than genre. Bringing together members of groups like The Menzingers and Cayetana for a string of recent “family shows” in PA and New York, Harvey’s philosophy of DIY is clearly one truer to the term’s origins than the fabricated aesthetic it’s grown into.
After a busy year full of Kacey covers, Chong-promoted singles, and rainy trips to LA, he’s closing out 2019 with the release of “You & I,” a single he recorded with his partner Anika Pyle after writing the lyrics a year ago as a no-longer-personal Christmas letter to her.
“I wrote ‘You & I’ almost exactly one year ago today for Anika, when I asked her what she wanted for the holidays last year she said ‘I just want you to write me a letter like you used to,’” Harvey recalls. “This song was born out of that conversation and is an open letter to the person I love most. It feels fitting to finally get to share it this time of year, and more so to sing it together.”
