Post-punk is still cool. Founding duo Frankie Rose (Dum Dum Girls, Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts) and Drew Citron (Avan Lava) even make the genre sexy with their project, Beverly. After the two bonded over similar musical tastes, the rockers decided to try their hand at creating a fuzzed-up, dreamy pop-rock record together. Careers is loosely wound, yet structurally focused. Each track chases after the former, then proceeds to trip and stumble over it to gain the lead. The rush seems to be the intent, which can be aptly credited to Rose’s hard-pressed drumming and Citron’s knack for creating immense aural textures. Rose, who also provided vocal harmonies for the album, has since left the project to pursue her solo career and yet Beverly lives on with Citron taking the lead of a now four-piece outfit. And there you have it. Sexy coolness: proven.
