Especially in the internet age, it’s always an appealing thought to share your creative output as soon as you feel it’s completed—or at least presentable. For the LA-based songwriter NAKAYA, though, it isn’t quite that simple; and in the case of her latest single, “Try,” the process of fully comprehending the idea she was expressing took seven years to complete, transitioning over time from the internal battle that spawned it to her present state of feeling at peace with the way that battle became resolved, with plenty of perspective to enhance the track’s meaning.
“It felt like a natural progression to share this now when the demons I once fought in my head have finally silenced,” she shares of the new track, which charts the songwriter’s journey toward self-acceptance. “There is nostalgia and kindness in the way I understand ‘Try’ now that I’m stronger in my identity.”
The single arrives ahead of her newly announced Fire Becomes Me EP, set to drop April 1 via Better Company, and it comes with a cavernous music video providing a dramatic visual to NAKAYA’s cool vocals and funky instrumental. Watch that below.
