After releasing his 2016 album Fireplace: TheNotTheOtherSide, Odd Future alum Hodgy went on a hiatus. He moved from Los Angeles to Toronto to focus on his family and new creative affairs before returning last month with the single "Everyday," which was produced by Gorillaz guitarist Jeff Wootton. "I’m grateful to be involved in this thing we call life," he said. "Here on earth, dedication is truth. After a much needed hiatus, what’s next for me?" Today, he answered that question with a follow-up single that suggests his hiatus is finally over.

"People Change" was produced by Vyron Tuner a.k.a. Left Brain, who was also a part of Odd Future and had a side project with Hodgy called MellowHype. "This record was channeled in 2018, where, Vyron and myself worked from home for one consecutive week—making what we thought was to be an album," Hodgy shared in a press statement. “‘People Change’ is raw and rough-edged—material that is foreign to my current creative process. But this song captures my mental standpoint from a few years back.”

"Selfish, I'm taking a selfie, me / I come first from my head to my toes," he raps at one point in a cocksure tone. The single finds Hodgy revisiting his younger state of mind. His voice dips and dives as he spews bravado and then pivots into struggles for growth—he's not the same Cali kid, after all. "My new motive in life is to move slower / And to move forward and create a new cure for this world / New closure.
