2014. “Nightcrawler” trailer.

No, this is not a Marvel movie, but that doesn’t make this Nightcrawler any less interesting and action-packed. There’s a lot (and, yet, also very little) happening in this trailer—but it has the familiar dark grit and unsettling eeriness of Donnie Darko, which seems quite fitting seeing that Gyllenhaal looks just as manic in this one.

What we can glean from the trailer: the film takes place on the streets of LA, where Gyllenhaal’s character uses his ambition (and a catchy motto) to land a job in crime journalism. Driving from one crime scene to another while accompanied by his protégé (Riz Ahmed), Gyllenhaal is determined to share breaking news as it happens, sometimes even before the police arrive. Ethical lines blurred,  there’s no telling where he’ll go to get a great story.

Nightcrawler is the directorial debut of Dan Gilroy (who also penned the screenplay) and also stars Bill Paxton and Rene Russo. Nightcrawler is out in theaters on October 31.
