Omar Apollo is preparing to release his latest album Ivory, the follow-up to 2020's Apolonio, on April 8. He's already shared a couple singles, including "Invincible" featuring Daniel Caesar and "Killing Me," and now he's released another titled "Tamagotchi" that was produced by The Neptunes' Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo. The track was recorded with the pair last year in Miami.
In a new interview with Zane Lowe, Apollo detailed his experience working with the duo. "That was the craziest trip of my life. I remember the first night I didn't even sleep," he recalled. "He loved what I made. We were talking about it and he brought up everyone upstairs. Pusha T was there." You can hear the giant grin expanding across his face as he tells the story.
In the interview Apollo also shared the importance of boundaries, and how prior to announcing Ivory he made an album that he absolutely hated. He called it off two days before the first video shoot. "That video shoot was going to be the start of the rollout," he said. "I just found myself compromising so much I wasn't excited about it releasing. I wasn't hype about performing 'em or learning 'em. I could tell something's missing. The soul is gone." Instead, he scrapped the album and made a brand new project in three months.
