Phebe Starr has been putting out music under her own name—as well as penning songs for other high-profile performers—for nearly a decade at this point, yet her debut record only arrived this month. As the album title may suggest, Heavy Metal Flower Petal is a capsule of extremes that documents the highs and lows of the latest chapter of Starr’s life, which follows a separation form the partner she married at a young age.
It’s one of those tracks, “Air,” that she brought to the “Neighborhoods” set she performed away from her native Australia, setting up in the backyard of a friend’s house in the LA neighborhood of Highland Park. Transforming the dense, nu-disco sounds and voice distortion of the original to a sparse acoustic guitar ballad, the performance hews closely to the “flower petal” end of the spectrum outlined in the title of her debut.
