If there’s any throughline connecting the five songs on Lily Lizotte’s new EP as THE BLSSM, it’s an insistence on a to-the-max aesthetic. From the all-caps tracklist to the maximalist pop cramming countless ideas into each cut, PURE ENERGY feels like at least an LP’s worth of concepts shaved down to something highly palatable.
With the full project arriving today via Fueled by Ramen, Lizotte is sharing an appropriately vibrant visual for the track “I HATE SUNDAY,” which warps over the course of three minutes from a tame pop ballad to something that blends early-’00s radio hits with the digitized chaos of the modern day.
“When I started writing the EP and working on the concept for the ‘I HATE SUNDAY’ video, it was so clear to me that the direction was purely just energy…it wasn’t derived from any specific genre or influence,” they share. “I chewed up and spat out all my influences into one project that sounds like what ‘pop music’ is to me. It’s a timestamp of my life and it feels like every song is an individual facet of my personality…except really exaggerated to the max! I think that’s my favorite thing to do when I make music, visuals, or anything creative is exaggerate and magnify anything I make into being hyper-poetic.”
