Andy Craig’s solo venture The Gloomies has been releasing music since 2015, originally coasting off the success of a single that caught fire on SoundCloud. Yet a 2019 tour opening for Local Natives introduced the latest chapter for the project, with Craig and the Natives’ Nik Ewing jamming on what would ultimately become The Gloomies’ latest hit, “Talk.”

“We were at his studio jamming on a different song for one of his projects and ended up writing and recording most of ‘Talk’ in that one session,” recalls Craig of the single which was co-written and produced by Ewing and released on his label Chewing Inc. “A year later when everything slowed down during the pandemic, I wrote pretty of-the-times lyrics; misinformation, a tyrannical clown spewing garbage into the air, etc. I had just reached a point of feeling tired and worn out from it all. I think everyone was tired and had reached a breaking point.”

Craig recently brought the track up to a rooftop near his home in New York City for a solo “Neighborhoods” performance in which he sheds the thick psych-pop production away from “Talk” for a rendition that emphasizes its dire lyrics and moody electric guitar. Watch it below.
