In the thirteen years since The X-Files was taken off the air, fans of (arguably) the greatest sci-fi series of all time have had little to whet their suspicious appetites. There was the super-whatever feature-length reboot in 2008, but besides that, we’ve all had to make due with watching Mulder become a sex addict for Showtime, and Scully become a Victorian heroine for the BBC…like a bunch of times (she’s really good at it).
Perhaps driven, in part, by the rabid reception of the planned (but problematic) Twin Peaks revival, Fox has now decided to give its hugely successful and creepy ’90s series another shot. In a just-announced deal, the network has agreed to a six-episode limited series run with original showrunner Chris Carter that will, of course, bring back David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to reprise their essential roles.
Speaking of his mentality going into the shoot, Carter said, “I think of it as a 13-year commercial break.” And likely in order to acquiesce the predictably skeptical fanbase (that is the whole point of the show, right?), he added, “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”
Not much else has been announced as of yet, but production is tentatively planned for this summer. Nice try, guys. We trust no one.
