At the onset of the pandemic back in 2020, Australian rockers Last Dinosaurs found themselves stranded in Canada as borders began closing before making their way down to Mexico where they spent a good chunk of quarantine. The creative space this period allowed for lent itself to their forthcoming album From Mexico with Love and all the heavy topics it deals with, such as recent single “Auto-Sabotage”’s contemplation of self-sabotage.
“The sheer surplus of time that I had firstly got me facing my demons and disciplining myself,” Lachlan Caskey shared of his time in Mexico. “But it’s as if the other things in life which generate difficulty or tension require some sort of self-sabotage to deal with them. To dabble in the dark side of things even if they are mundane—alcohol, lust, addictive video games, gossip—is somewhat necessary to existence. We can't be hyper-controlled and all entirely pure, at least in most cases… I don't wish to make a song which simply makes it OK to destroy yourself and your goals, but rather to point it out as a problem, to expose it as a sly and clandestine condition of the mind.”
Today the band is sharing a music video for the track, which sees Caskey evidently engaging in an addiction to TV to the point where he hallucinates himself performing “Auto-Sabotage” clad in the same pajamas he’s currently stewing in on the couch, the bright, upbeat instrumentation contrasting with the dark mental space he’s inhabiting.
