Last week, Arctic Monkeys announced their return with a new album called The Car that's out October 21. That proximity to Halloween and the album's title had me thinking that it might be an homage to the '70s horror flick of the same name. Well, given the reveal of its first single "There'd Better Be a Mirrorball," it's safe to say that it's most likely not.
"Mirrorball" follows the suave, sauntering rock the group ushered in with their last album Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino. Over gentle percussion and piano, Alex Turner throws us into the scene of him de-escalating some sort of relationship tiff. "So if you wanna walk me to the car / You outta know I'll have a heavy heart / So can we please be absolutely sure that there's a mirror ball," he sings during the chorus where we get the name of the song as well as the mysterious album title. Arctic Monkeys leave much to the imagination for the scenes left to be set on their forthcoming album.
The song also comes with a video directed by Turner, which you can watch below. Pre-order The Car here.
