Kendrick Lamar

This past May, Kendrick Lamar made his anticipated return with Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. Whether you interpret Lamar's latest release as controversial or affecting, it's a work of art that's immensely evocative of humanity's complexity. One of the album's most intense songs, which plays as a lyrical fight between lovers, now gets a fittingly tense visual. Today, Lamar shared a short film around the track "We Cry Together" that features actress Taylour Paige, who also appears on the original recording. "We Cry Together" was recorded live on March 15th, 2020 and directed by Jake Schreier, Dave Free, and Kendrick Lamar.

The visual finds the two fighting: "I fucking hate you," Paige yells at the beginning. The fight addresses infidelity, emotional abuse, and projections about what each partner stands for in larger society. The two wield their words like serrated daggers that they push in deeper with every new passionate claim. The heat between them escalates for five minutes until they end their argument with sex. Like I said, it's fucking tense.
