Earlier this summer, BEGINNERS announced their new album If the World Is Ending with the abrasive electronic single “I Hate That I Love Brooklyn,” which hinted at the forthcoming release embracing the late-’00s, pre-dubstep-ified party-pop of artists like Ke$ha. Yet the latest sample of the project instead feels rooted in the sounds of alt-rock, with vocalist Samantha Barbera invoking the grunge-inspired breakup songs of Olivia Rodrigo as she threatens to trash an ex’s Pixies t-shirt.

“Doing a more indie rock–driven song like ‘Goodbye, Good Luck’ was a breath of fresh air for [co-producer/co-writer Robert DeLong and me],” she explains. “It was really cathartic to lean into my angsty broken heartedness on this song—‘No one tells you life’s a bullet / You might die alone’—while also kinda keeping it fun and taking the piss with lines like, ‘This shit fucking sucks / You always seem to find a way to go and mess it up / Goodbye, good luck trying to find your Pixies t-shirt in the trash truck.’"

Hear the track below, and expect If the World Is Ending to arrive in the coming months.
