With his new record due next week, Richard Edwards—formerly of Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s—offers up something noticeably different by way of a collaboration with the LA-based Section Quartet. It’s a cover of one of Radiohead’s most well-loved unreleased tracks dating as far as back as 1995 before finally making the cut for a studio album as the closer to their 2016 LP A Moon Shaped Pool: “True Love Waits.”
A daunting song to tackle, this rendition has been in the works for a relatively brief time (five years, as opposed to Radiohead’s two decades). It’s simply vocals and strings, and it’s a stunning take on a song which fans will know appeared in multiple different guises over the years. Per Edwards: “At some point during a 2017 stay in Los Angeles, the Section Quartet asked me to sing this song with them at Largo. It was a fun night and it inspired us to record a version of it. Like everybody else, we all got busy and it remained on the back-burner for a few years. Well, we finally mixed the dang thing and decided to release it!”
Out tomorrow, proceeds from the single benefit the International Rescue Committee and its efforts to aid the women of Afghanistan. “In a time where atrocity after atrocity wipes each out of the news cycle faster than ever before, this issue deserves the world's attention,” Edwards adds. “While I'm under no illusion that music can fix anything, we hope that if you enjoy this song, it will move you to make a contribution to this vitally important mission.”
We’ve got your first listen below. Edwards’ fourth solo album Ghost Electricity/Vampire Draw also lands next Friday, October 7.
