After releasing three solo records, Athens, Georgia native Drew Beskin accidentally launched a full-band endeavor when he and his friends teamed up for a studio session in the early months of the pandemic. Thus, Drew Beskin & the Sunshine came into being with their debut collection of songs—titled Somewhere Sideways Same as You—not too far off on the horizon, dropping back in September via the band’s own labels Super Canoe and We Built a Zoo Records.
It’s from this batch of songs that Beskin and his band pulled “Furrowed Brow” to perform for their recent “Neighborhoods” session in Athens’ Normaltown neighborhood, with Tommy Trautwein and Elijah Johnston joining Beskin on acoustic guitar and Gideon Johnston taking on snare and tambourine duty. In contrast to the lushly produced studio version, the live performance takes the form of a fairly ramshackle, lo-fi sound equally familiar to the city’s musical history, at times recalling the warm, tape-hiss appeal of Elephant 6 bands.
