The French duo Kids Return take their name from the Kitano film of the same name, wherein two high school students drop out to pursue violent careers (one a little more legitimate than the other). Yet the music Adrien Rozé and Clément Savoye create together is anything but violent, their chemistry inspiring a unique blend of sounds passed down from familiar indie-pop forebears ranging from Chromatics to Generationals to create a sunny, laid back atmosphere on their recent debut album Forever Melodies.
With that record arriving a month ago via Ekleroshock and Hamburger Records, we asked the duo to perform a couple of its songs for a “Neighborhoods” session filmed in a backyard in their hometown of Paris. Strumming through “Lost in Los Angeles” and “My Life,” the brief set (featuring a cameo from an affectionate cat) strips these singles down to the basics while leaving the charming melodies fully intact.
