One of the highlights of veronicavon’s dreamy, casually devastating Next Life EP—released last November—is the opener “Good Girl,” a heartbreak number that oozes nostalgia. But beneath the song’s soft sheen and melancholy currents is a portrait of someone dealing with this bullshit: “Go and make sure your dog is fed / You just play me, leave me on read / Try and fight me in my bed / Are you winning ’cause you give me head?”

“‘Good Girl’ is like a glowing polaroid of bittersweet heartbreak—but sexy,” veronicavon’s Xuan Nguyen says of the song. “I originally wanted to call it ‘All the Times I’ve Acquiesced,’ but I thought, ‘Whoa, calm down, I’m not Fiona Apple.’”

The self-described “glo-fi” duo of Nguyen and Chris Hackman tapped director Troy Lustick to capture that “glowing polaroid” quality with a sun-kissed visual starring Nguyen and Hackman as lovelorn Angelenos. Equally influenced by Wes Anderson and Napoleon Dynamite, the final product is a grainy fantasy featuring bright colors, berets, and bubbles.

“Troy and his team absolutely crushed the video, making all of our in-camera zoom dreams come true,” says Hackman, referring to a lens that gives the video its vintage feel. “I’ve wanted to work with Troy for a good while... I discovered his videos in my internet wanderings last year, and he instantly went on my ‘bucket list’ of dream collaborators. Then it came true, basically, like, immediately. We’re so amped.”
