When Exile in Guyville came out almost twenty-two years ago, Steve Albini (at the peak of his career and influence, just before his latest production In Utero came out) had some stupid things to say about Liz Phair, describing her as “more talked-about than heard, a persona completely unrooted in substance, and a fucking chore to listen to.” He was wrong, of course, since that album rules, and helped establish an excellent sound and style that still has relevance today.
One student of the Guyville sound is the force behind the Nashville group Bully, Alicia Bognanno, who ironically enough, used to intern at Steve Albini’s studio Electrical Audio, where she recorded, co-engineered, and mixed her group’s full-length debut Feels Like.
The first track from that upcoming release, “I Remember,” caught a lot of deserved attention, and set the stage for the Stereogum-premiered second single, “Trying,” a somewhat more subdued (but no less raucously flooring) track that shows off Bognonno’s impressive production chops.
Feels Like is out June 23 via StarTime International.
