Last Friday, Brandon Hoogenboom released his debut full-length collection of songs Good for Nothing (A Spiraling Blackout Montage) which occasionally recalls Father John Misty in both its baroque compositions and its lyricist’s witty, relevant, and occasionally deprecating lyricism. But under the mononym HOOGENBOOM, the West Coast songwriter is forging his own path with his unique orchestral sounds complementing the often-heavy personal subject matter dissected in each track.
Hoogenboom and his band recently brought the album cut “Shame on Us” to Dana Point, California for a “Neighborhoods” session filmed in a pedestrian tunnel a short distance from Salt Creek Beach. Harmonizing over acoustic guitar, the trio chew over cancel culture, burnout, and other pitfalls of the internet era in the echoey underpass. Check it out below.
