The Canadian-based indie rock group The Rural Alberta Advantage—widely recognized as being one of the most outstanding live bands out there—created their third studio album, Mended with Gold, with a fairly universal concept in mind: our history, and all the sadness it may have included, shapes the person we are today. According to the trio, it was celebrating their collective successes, heartbreaks, and mistakes over the years that formed the twelve-track album.
And “Terrified,” the album’s first single, truly embodies the upcoming album’s communal philosophy. The past is to be remembered, not hidden. Singer-songwriter Nils Edenloff’s clear, yodeling voice—at times reminiscent of a Chris Martin pitch—sings volumes about honesty, with a forceful acoustic guitar thrashing behind him. Confession leaks from Edenloff’s lyrics, as he seems to succumb to whatever it is he is so “terrified” of. The Rural Alberta Advantage’s naked track applauds pain and fear; the feelings once taught to be concealed.
The Rural Alberta Advantage’s upcoming album, Mended with Gold, is out September 30 via Saddle Creek. Listen to the single, “Terrified,” below.
