Last month, German pop quartet Rikas made their live debut here in the States with a string of sets across the week they spent in Austin for SXSW. Leading up to those performances, they introduced a lovelorn new single produced by Jonathan Rado called “Up All Night,” which also precedes their plans to complete and tour their second full-length record later this year in Berlin.
In the meantime, their trip to Austin wasn’t only fruitful in accumulating a new American audience, but it also presented them with the opportunity to film a visual component to their latest track. Just hours before flying back home, all four members popped in earbuds and filmed themselves as they sang along to the track while taking a ride in electric carts through the aisles of a nearby Walmart. “Of course we needed to shop for groceries somewhere, and when we went to Walmart we had the idea of shooting a video there,” recalls guitarist/keyboardist Sascha. “It was kind of guerrilla, but in the end we headed off to Germany with a music video in our pockets. I think the story of shooting the video and the video itself suits the mood of the song even though it’s kind of limited, but that’s the fun and creative part about it.”
While Walmart may not be the most romantic of settings, the visual pairs well with the song’s lighthearted energy—check it out below.
