Under the moniker Goo, Brooklyn-based singer and guitarist Beck Zegans crafts songs that feel designed to keep you company in your favorite dimly lit corner of your favorite dimly lit dive bar while you stare into your beer and think about What It All Means. She’s spent the last few years evolving a sweet, flickering brand of indie folk, but her latest single, “Other Side,” finds Zegans pivoting to country noir as she imagines “buildings…falling down / as my old lover comes to town.”
“‘Other Side’ is about the unexpected return of an old flame,” Zegan confirms. “I wanted it to have a hazy old western ‘this town ain’t big enough for the both of us’ feeling, except instead of nemeses it’s former lovers who can’t ignore the draw of each others’ presence. The air, the buildings, the whole mood of the city is different knowing that person is back in town.”
The final product—co-produced by Zegans and Julian Fader—arrives as a snaking, smoldering follow-up to Goo’s previous single “Outlaw.” Both songs will appear on her forthcoming record Squid Ink Sky, due June 9 and available for preorder here. For now you can check out “Other Side” below, and catch Goo at Alphaville on April 7 with fellow travelers Allegra Krieger and Blue Yonder.
