After shuttering in 2016, an Austin classic returned this past weekend for it's 15th anniversary. Austin Psych Fest was back in full force for three days and nights of genre-bending psych rock and beyond, with 34 artists performing on two stages at the Far Out Lounge and Stage.
In 2016, the festival—which was scheduled to feature Brian Wilson performing Pet Sounds, Animal Collective, and more—was cancelled due to severe weather, which caused significant damage to the festival grounds. Austin Psych Fest never returned, but instead was later renamed Levitation. Now the city has two fests paying homage to Austin’s psychedelic roots with a smorgasbord of psych rock, dream pop, electronic, and indie artists from around the world.
Friday night saw another storm roll in during Acid Mother Temple's set that forced an evacuation for over an hour, but the show carried on without a hitch after that, including stand-out performances from Cuco, Yves Tumor, Night Beats, Toro y Moi, Melody's Echo Chamber, Crumb, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Automatic, and, of course, the festival's co-founders The Black Angels.
FLOOD photographer Daniel Cavazos was there throughout it all, storm be damned, to capture all of the highlights below.
