When Sondre Lerche released the 10-minute title track from his album Avatars of Love back in February 2022, it was a beacon of the surpluses to come for the Norwegian songwriter. Not only did that album arrive on its heels, but Lerche has since put out a companion album called Avatars of the Night comprised of 20 new recordings—mostly remixes and alternate versions of Love songs, as well as a cover and a brand new single called “The Most Savage Joke.” All of this, of course, is in addition to Lerche making his stage debut in an upcoming Nordic production of Moulin Rouge!, in which he’ll be playing the lead role of Christian.

In the meantime, Lerche revisited that aforementioned new single in an acoustic “Neighborhoods” set he performed for us recently, tacking a cover (which didn’t appear on Avatars of the Night) to the end of his set: a gentle rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Night Ride Home.” Set up in Oslo’s botanical garden, check out Lerche’s peaceful performance below.
