Portuguese quartet Hause Plants have been keeping busy since their arrival on the scene in late 2020. They’ve got two EPs out, and haven't been especially beholden to any particular genre. An eclectic approach is all well and good, but getting to the place where you feel that your music is more than the sum of its influences is a tough task, particularly at this early career stage.
They’re happy to go on record and say the second single from their forthcoming third EP is the first step toward really figuring themselves out. “Shining Blue” flits nimbly between moods, never quite settling but nonetheless content in its indecision. It covers plenty of ground in its three-and-a-half-minute runtime, the synth-heavy verses set against the ferocious shoegaze squall of its chorus.
“This is probably the first song we’ve written where we felt comfortable with the way we incorporate our influences into our own songs,” vocalist Guilherme Correia explains. “Contrary to what we’ve done in the past, when we weren’t so comfortable with our writing skills, this time we felt like we could draw from our favorite bands without ending up sounding exactly like other [bands]. In the end it still sounds like Hause Plants. It gives us confidence to sound like ourselves, and that’s the main reason we love this song.”
Both “Shining Blue” and lead single “I Think I Might” are part of their new EP Field Trip to Coney Island, out June 23 via LA-based label Spirit Goth. Hear the new track below.
