Originally releasing a series of downtempo records as D.V.S.*, Derek VanScoten rebranded as Cloudchord around the release of a 2016 remix collection and has consistently been pumping out grooving beat tapes ever since. The latest of which, Bloom Bap, arrived back in March via Nettwerk, collecting a handful of collaborative recordings and some solo ventures together with a title that indicates the sort of instrumental hip-hop by way of floral imagery the musician has come to be known for.
Set up along Austin’s Colorado River, Van Scoten recently brought the song “Disco Fizz” (which features British producer Birocratic on the album) to a recent “Neighborhoods” set in his hometown of the Texas capital. Covering electric guitar, slide guitar, and sampler by himself with impressive ease, the performance nails the sound and energy of the original recording. Check out the video below.
