Nashville art-punk icons Be Your Own Pet are following up their triumphant return earlier this year with a new album called Mommy. Set for release on August 25 courtesy of Third Man Records, the group is celebrating the announcement with another new single, “Worship the Whip.”
The raucous return follows “Hand Grenade,” released back in March after a series of rowdy sets at SXSW. The two tracks confirm that Be Your Own Pet haven’t lost a step during their nearly 15 year hiatus. Sparring guitar parts create a dissonant bed atop which singer Jemina Pearl Abegg delivers her signature snarl.
The album was written and recorded by Pearl Abegg and the two other founding members, Jonas Stein (guitar) and Nathan Vasquez (bass), alongside longtime drummer John Eatherly. “For better or worse, we all were slapped in the face that it wasn’t as easy on our own,” Stein says of their hiatus. “We were all moderately successful, but nobody found that Be Your Own Pet chemistry.”
