Between the record’s pre-released singles “All I Wanna Do Is Hate” and “Micro Aggression,” KILLJOY, the debut LP from Isle of Wight collective Coach Party, is shaping up to be a raging, confrontational, and fairly grungy take on electronic pop music. Yet with the record’s latest single, “Born Leader,” the group takes their foot off the gas for something considerably more patiently self-reflective—both lyrically and instrumentally.

Landing between two “thrashy” songs on the album’s track list, as drummer/producer Guy Page describes them, “Born Leader” is straight-laced dream-pop fueled by vocalist Jess Eastwood’s conflicted internal monologue. “This song more calmly confronts how we can overthink the way others might view ourselves—as a person, a friend, a partner, a public figure, whatever—and to let those thoughts influence who you think you should be, or encourage you to hide your true self to keep up a façade which likely only exists in your own head,” shares Page. “But the truth is that those superficial efforts aren’t going to be what anyone really loves about you; it just feeds your own self-doubt.”

Check out a visualizer for the track below, which includes lyrics and some skeletons shredding (hell yeah). You can also pre-save KILLJOY here.
