Cornelius, the Japanese pioneer of the collage-based pop subgenre called Shibuya-kei, has released a buoyant and playful new track entitled “Mirage.” The song arrives just a day ahead of the artist’s new album, Dream in Dream. The track follows “All Things Must Pass,” which was teased as the last pre-album single last week.

On the cut, trance-inspired synths interlock with a propulsive drum groove and a methodical bass line that gives the song a hefty rhythm. Cornelius’ voice comes in and sounds mysterious and seductive, a nice parallel to Kaputt-era Destroyer and the soft-rock resurgence of the early-2010s.

Regarding the album, Cornelius said, “The meaning of the title is to dream inside a dream. The image is about dreaming in a dream and in a dream… and it’s like a multiple world that continues infinitely. It’s like drifting in between reality and dreams. I am also interested in recent physics and what is being researched in quantum mechanics.”
