Probably one of the stranger, but nonetheless welcome, traditions in politics, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner went down over the weekend in Washington, DC, allowing select comedians and politicians the incredible opportunity to live out the American Dream by insulting the President of the United States to his (or God willing, her) face.
Cecily Strong hosted the festivities—only the fourth woman to host the event in its ninety-five years (which didn’t even allow women to attend until 1962)—and did a good job of it, but the show was arguably stolen by Keegan-Michael Key of Key and Peele, who got the chance to apply the character of Luther, presidential anger translator, in real life.
The experience appeared to be cathartic (in one way or another) for both Obama and Luther, but the reactions coming from the super-strange DC-meets-Hollywood crowd tell a story of their own.
Our favorite attendee reactions, in addition to the clip, are below.
