swim good now, the recording project of Toronto-based artist Jon Jasper-Lawless, has released a delightful and meditative folktronica-inspired track entitled “Campfire.” With shades of Gold Panda, The Books, and Boards of Canada, swim good now’s latest single is a nostalgic trip to a cool night under the stars with a few friends and plenty of bourbon. The good memory ends abruptly, though, as the track is interrupted by a cascading wall of aggressive guitar that gives the song a completely different personality. It’s a bold move, but one that pays immediate dividends.

Jasper-Lawless—who has co-produced tracks with members of Bon Iver, BADBADNOTGOOD, and Broken Social Scene, as well as Joji, Daniela Andrade, Gia Margaret, and Ryan Hemsworth—reflects on the song, saying, “I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of different people over the years but this track is just me…so that’s inherently a bit nerve-wracking. It actually started way folkier with words and all but then it kind of quickly morphed into this sort of J Dilla/Johnny Marr/Radiohead-inspired thing.”
