Instrumental post-hardcore titans Pelican have shared a cover of the song “Gasoline” by Karate, out now via Numero Group. For the cut, the Chicago-based group recruited Chris Hansen of Pinebender to perform the vocals. The sparse landscape of heavy bass, atmospheric drums, and plaintive guitar chords leaves plenty of room for Hansen to stretch his melodic range, offering up a captivating performance that begs the question: Should more Pelican songs have vocals? Probably not, but the point is...this track rips.

Pelican also recently released a deluxe edition of their 2005 album The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw via Thrill Jockey. The project was remixed from the original tapes by the album’s original recording engineer Greg Norman. The reissue is the third and final in a series of deluxe reissues of their early material.

The band are playing dates across the Midwest next week with Upper Wilds (with Uniform joining for their hometown Chicago gig) to celebrate the releases. Stream the band’s cover of “Gasoline” below, and check out Pelican’s tour dates here.
