Since we last connected with Arny Margret when she released her debut EP last March, the Icelandic songwriter went on to close out 2022 by releasing her debut full-length, they only talk about the weather, before touring Europe and the US in support of it. It wasn’t long before we received news of yet another release, with her follow-up EP dinner alone scheduled to arrive less than a year after her album on September 22.
In the meantime, Margret has also worked up the courage to return to playing piano, the instrument she initially gravitated toward before switching to guitar as a teenager. While the EP’s first two singles echo the haunting acoustic-guitar-based folk of her prior recordings, it’s the piano she chooses as her instrument for a new live video she recorded to introduce the forthcoming EP’s title track. Debuting as the latest installment of our “FLOOD Sessions” series, the deeply intimate performance at Iceland’s Hljóðriti Studios suggests that a re-recording of the songwriter’s budding discography as piano versions wouldn’t be a bad idea.
“We filmed ‘dinner alone’ live in the studio where all my previous songs have been recorded. It’s one take, very vulnerable,” Margret shares of the session. “It’s also my first-ever song on piano—a bit different, but very exciting, for me at least. I’ve always played the piano, but I’ve always been scared to write on it. I never felt that I was good enough, but here it is.”
It’s certainly good enough for us. Check out the solo performance below.
