The Breeders have shared a new single entitled “Divine Mascis,” a previously unreleased version of their Last Splash song “Divine Hammer” featuring vocals from Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis. The track will be featured on their upcoming reissue of that 1993 LP, set to be released this Friday, September 22.
Kelley Deal explained how this new version came together in an interview with Uncut, having said, “At the time, J Mascis was a guitar god… we sent him the tape to put guitar on, so when it came back and he’s got rid of our voices and just put his vocal on, we were like, ‘Wha?!’ But it’s really cute. There’s a freshness to it, and it’s just so weird. I like his voice and the idiosyncratic way he sings and delivers lines. So I thought it was really neat.”
To gear up for the 30th anniversary release, the band is currently touring and performing Last Splash in its entirety, recruiting Belly (formed by original Breeder Tanya Donelly), Screaming Females, and Horsegirl as openers in select markets. They will also be warming things up for Olivia Rodrigo in Los Angeles and New York in 2024.
