Mitski’s acoustic tour in support of her new album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We hit New York City last night with an intimate show at The Town Hall in the Theater District. Backed by only a cellist and guitarist, Mitski delivered a captivating performance of all of the material from the new album, along with a handful of songs from her back catalog.
She ended the evening with a cover of Pete Seeger’s “Coyote, My Little Brother,” introducing the song by reflecting on his environmental work in the Hudson River Valley and reminding the audience “as a former New Yorker in a room of current New Yorkers, we may share some collective trauma.” She reminisced about living in New York a decade ago when she launched her music career with her 2013 LP Retired from Sad, New Career in Business. She thanked the room for staying with her through her musical journey, comparing it to a book that “only has a few pages left”—but she’s “excited for her next book, whatever that may be.”
FLOOD photographer Skylar Watkins was in the city to experience her performance, which she described in a word as “ethereal.” See her photos below.
