Local Natives’ co-lead-singer and songwriter Kelcey Ayer, who also performs under the name Jaws of Love, has released a cover of Deftones’ classic track “Change (In the House of Flies)” which was performed live and recorded by frequent collaborator Danny Reisch at Electric Ear in Highland Park in LA. The cover is part of a new album entitled SLSL: Naked that’s comprised of stripped-back versions of songs from Ayer’s sophomore album Second Life and its preceding Patricia EP, both released last year.
Regarding the song, Ayer says, “Deftones was a huge band for me growing up, especially their third album White Pony. I remember being blown away by ‘Change,’ ‘Digital Bath,’ ‘Knife Prty,’ and so many others, and it’s a testament to their vision and talent that it stands up to this day. Second Life took a ton of influence from WP, particularly Terry Date’s ethereal, beautiful vocal production. So while I was recording these stripped-down versions of my most recent songs, I thought it was a great chance to show my love for Deftones. ‘Change’ felt like the obvious choice since it’s incredible, but also has one of the greatest harmonies in nu-metal. I had to do it.”
