Live, in Photos: Bethany Cosentino and Sam Austins at The Sun Rose

Independently formed in 2003, non-profit organization SoundExchange has spent the last 20 years supporting musicians by helping over 650,000 artists manage and collect digital royalties for their work. This month, FLOOD partnered with SoundExchange to celebrate their anniversary with a series of bicoastal events. Last week we took over Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right venue with the inimitable Blu DeTiger and vocal powerhouse Wé Ani, and last night we hosted an intimate, private event at the Sun Rose in LA with Best Coast vocalist Bethany Cosentino and Detroit-born songwriter Sam Austins.

We’ve witnessed many great Best Coast performances over the years, but this moment feels extra special as we watch Cosentino spread her wings and branch out as a solo artist. Playing only her second proper show with her new band after their debut last month at the Troubadour, she’s truly showcasing her immense vocal talents like never before. For her Sun Rose set, Cosentino focused on selections from her new solo album, Natural Disaster, along with a cover of Linda Ronstadt’s classic “Faithless Love“ and, as solo performances, two Best Coast hits (“Our Deal,” “When I’m with You”).

Meanwhile, Austins opened the show with plenty of energy, performing his first-ever stripped-down set with just an electric guitarist. His wild charisma and genre-hopping grooves left the room knowing they would definitely be hearing more from this unique artist.
