As 2023 winds down, songwriter Jayden Nicole Binnix has plenty to be proud of this year—from releasing two more broadly playlistable alt-rock-inspired singles under their moniker Black Polish to opening a set for breakout artist hemlocke springs, who Binnix cites as an artist they’ve long had on their stage-sharing bucket list. Yet 2024 is shaping up to be even bigger: With the recent announcement of their debut album Forest (Monsters Live in the Trees), which is set to arrive on January 26 via Riptide Music, another new single is arriving today to garner excitement for the release.
“Void” familiarly incorporates several of Black Polish’s biggest influences, from the folk-pop strums of Lord Huron to the outsider-indie of Alex G, while furthering the project’s mission of exploring Binnix’s journey through self-identity. “This album explores the different stages and places mental health can take you once you spiral,” they share, situating the track within the wider context of the forthcoming LP. “‘Void’ was really the start of everything that went downhill internally once I started seeking identity. All of the tracks speak of heartbreak, lack of self-love, dissociation, gender identity, and finding purpose for living.”
Diving deeper into the themes specifically addressed on the track, they continue: “‘Void’ both speaks of the current-day struggles and my upbringing of gender. During the time I was figuring out my identity, my main inspirations were Alex G, twenty one pilots, and Fleetwood Mac. I really wanted to hone in on the folk/alternative feel because it’s what I was surrounded with at the time. Me yelling in this song is releasing all of the childhood anger I couldn’t express from before—it’s my closure on who I am.”
