Not everything an artist does has to be taken so seriously. When Picasso had his little ceramics period, critics understood it as an attempt to please himself rather than satisfy the art world. Now, Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd are no Picassos, but Musik comes across as an attempt to break through the sonic and critical bubble of the Flaming Lips in order to explore something different and more personal. Every song is like a love letter to those psychedelic and prog rock bands from the duo’s youth, and one of the greatest pleasures of the album is realizing which song is dedicated to whom. The fuzzy and futuristic rhythms of Silver Apples pulsate throughout “Living,” and you can’t deny Neu!’s echoing presence in “Futuristic Hallucination.” It’s true that this won’t sound like a new addition to the Lips catalogue, because it isn’t. If anything, Musik simply exists as a precursor to everything Coyne and Drozd would and did do.
