As much fun as it can be to turn writer’s block itself into the subject of a song, it’s entirely more gratifying to hear a recording that channels the sounds of the songwriter’s metaphorical wheels turning again. In the case of NYC-based songwriter Selett, this breakthrough itself came with the imagery of wheels which, like interconnected gears, managed to set the waltzing composition “Wheels Within Wheels” in motion. “When you feel grand things, grand things happen,” she reflects. “Describing exactly how they come to be is impossible. It’s what everyone wants to know.”
The anachronistic tune opens with a lilting piano before Selett’s vocals introduce the track’s dizzying themes of infinite regress. “With this song I was just so overtaken by a sense of romance in betwixt faulty mechanisms of communication,” she continues of the track, which ultimately gets swallowed up by its dreamy, increasingly layered instrumental. “I’ve always loved idioms and I came into playing this waltz and didn’t even know I was singing an idiom. I got quite literally caught up in wheels.”
