After celebrating 25 years of the project’s indie-pop debut Overcome by Happiness last May, Pernice Brothers will return this April with their eighth LP and first since 2019’s Spread the Feeling. Who Will You Believe, out April 5 via new label home New West Records, features a dozen new jangling compositions (including one with Neko Case) that continue to build on the sound established on that 1998 debut, with early singles “December in Her Eyes” and the title track serving as promising looks at what the LP has in store.

Before the record lands, bandleader Joe Pernice rode his bike out to Lake Ontario to perform a pair of the album’s tracks—“December” and the yet-to-be-released “How Will We Sleep”—on acoustic guitar for a “Neighborhoods” session. With the Toronto skyline visible in the background, and a potentially volatile interaction with the area’s winged inhabitants successfully avoided, the solo session reworks both tracks as Cat Stevens-y compositions.
