Back in my day (like a year ago—I’m not that washed), a three-track collection would be called an EP, or even something like an expanded single. But in this, the year of our lord 2024, Jean Dawson has shared a new three-song capital-P project entitled Boohoo. I guess I’m the whiney baby “boo-hoo’ing” for even mentioning these semantics.

Anywho (anyboohoo), the collection begins with “New Age Crisis,” a stirring piano ballad with organ accents and massive vocals from Dawson. The drums come in in a surprising way, like some Jesus Christ Superstar cosplay (full disclosure: I’ve never actually seen the movie but it’s a rock opera, right? [Editor’s note: Yes it is, and it fucking whips. Pardon my language, Jesus/Ted Neeley]). Epic is a cringeworthy word, but this shit is truly epic.

“Divino Desmadre” is a bit more low-stakes, but equally beguiling, plus it’s the first song he’s sung in Spanish. EP, er, project closer “Taste Like Metal” also begins with piano before becoming something else entirely. Check out lead track “New Age Crisis” below, and stream all three songs here.
