Mdou Moctar have released a new single called “Imouhar” which will be featured on the band’s new album Funeral for Justice, set to arrive on May 3 via Matador Records. The new single—surprise, surprise—features shredding guitars, galloping drums, and powerful vocals. Moctar knows the formula, but it works damn well.
The track asks the Tuareg people to preserve their Tamasheq language. According to a press release, Moctar is one of the few in his community who knows how to write it. “People here are just using French,” Mdou noted. “They’re starting to forget their own language. We feel like in a hundred years no one will speak good Tamasheq, and that's so scary for us.”
The track comes alongside a video directed by Lauren Greenhall. Check that out below, and pre-order Funeral for Justice here.
