Gabriel Birnbaum has announced that his new album Patron Saint of Tireless Losers will arrive via Western Vinyl on June 28 (count me in for anything related to tireless losers, a club of which I am a proud member!). To celebrate the news, the songwriter has shared first single “Perfect Again,” a shimmering piece of jangly psych-pop built around a playful Rhodes melody, galloping drums, and Birnbaum’s charmingly lowkey delivery. He sings, “Every day I wake up perfect again.” Same here!
Regarding the track, Birnbaum shares: “The original lyric to this song came from an experience I had going alone to see Anteloper (featuring Jason Nazary and the legend Jaimie Branch, RIP) at Pioneer Works, but it didn’t ultimately pan out. I channeled the new [lyric] in the backyard of a coffee shop in Ditmas Park, describing the images that ran through my mind very literally as they gradually clarified into the travelogue of a paranoid loner roaming through an unpeopled US landscape with all the power still on, experiencing the kind of ultra-real reality of a crisis and getting high off it, shamelessly.”
Birnbaum’s band on the album includes Will Graefe (Maya Hawke, Okkervil River), Adam Brisbin (Buck Meek, Sam Evian), and the aforementioned Nazary (also of Bear in Heaven). Check out the single below, and pre-order Patron Saint of Tireless Losers here.
