Ahead of Tara Jane O’Neil’s forthcoming album The Cool Cloud of Okayness, the artist has shared “Glass Island.” The haunting and haunted folk-rock ballad floats along with O’Neil’s upper register vocals moving around like a wraith as guitar occasionally emphasizes her melody, and at other times opposes it. This blend of cohesion and tension gives the song an edge of worry, of something unexpected just around the bend.
The new album is one of renewal and rebirth, with the project having been recorded in Upper Ojai, California in a studio built on the ashes of a home lost to the Thomas Fire in 2017. The project features contributions from Sheridan Riley (Alvvays), multi-instrumentalist Walt McClements, and Hand Habits’ Meg Duffy.
The sepia-swelled DIY video for “Glass Island,” which was directed by Harry Dodge, mirrors some of the song’s poignant lyrics: “On another day / Walk up on the hill and back again / In that sun we played,” O’Neil sings.
