Believe it or not, there were other music festivals beyond Coachella taking place over the last couple of weekends. Curated by husband-and-wife indie-folk duo Shovels & Rope, the annual High Water Festival returned to picturesque Riverfront Park in North Charleston, South Carolina for a two-day lineup topped off by Noah Kahan and Hozier. As with past years, Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst hand-picked a lineup of artists who’ve seemingly forged paths similar to their own, musicians who have remained true to their musical visions despite commercial concerns.
The biggest factor impeding the festivities through the weekend was the weather. Saturday reached the 90s with immense humidity (Olivia Jean joked that it melted her gear on stage), while Sunday was cold and rainy throughout the day. That didn’t stop the artists or their fans from soldiering on, with massive crowds for Kahan’s Saturday night set, and riveting performances from Fleet Foxes, The Flaming Lips, The Walkmen, Courtney Barnett, The Linda Lindas, Briston Maroney, and Olivia Jean, among others.
Photographer Josh Darr weathered the elements throughout it all to capture live highlights, festival atmosphere, and intimate backstage portraits. Check out his photos below.
