On September 28, The Grateful Dead will release a boxed set large enough to soundtrack any trip, no matter how long and strange it might be. 30 Trips Around the Sun collects one live show from every year of the band’s thirty-year career, spanning seventy-three hours of music on eighty discs. A limited-edition of the set will also include a gold-colored 7” with “Caution (Do Not Stop on the Tracks)” from the band’s first-ever recording session on the A side and “Box of Rain,” the finale of the group’s final performance with Jerry Garcia at Soldier Field in 1995, on the flip.
The set’s show list—which begins with a 1966 set at San Francisco’s famed Fillmore—is available on the band’s web site.
Should the idea of spending three entire days of your life trying to understand the evolution of the Grateful Dead live experience seem too daunting, a four-disc version will be released on September 18, with one track taken from each of the larger set’s thirty shows.
Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann will reunite this summer under the Grateful Dead banner for the first time since Garcia’s 1995 death to play a handful of shows in Santa Clara, CA, and Chicago before retiring the name for good.
Watch a full Dead show from 1976 to tide you over until this fall.
