“When Postal Service made this record, we thought it would be a tiny little record that our friends would like and then go away,” Ben Gibbard told the Just Like Heaven festival crowd during their headlining set over the weekend. “We never imagined we’d be here 21 years later playing it for you."
But here we are two decades on, with The Postal Service—vocalist-guitarists Gibbard and Jenny Lewis, along with keyboardist and co-founder Jimmy Tamborello—playing their now-classic Give Up album in full to a packed crowd at Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, along with sets from so many other aughts favorites: Gibbard’s other band Death Cab for Cutie (who played all 11 tracks from their seminal Transatlanticism), Phoenix (who were joined for three songs by another hero of 2000s indie, Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig), Sleigh Bells, The War on Drugs, Phantogram, Tegan and Sara, Metric, and the long-awaited returns of both CSS and Gossip.
Also in the mix were indie faves Alvvays, Broken Social Scene, Warpaint, Washed Out, and the fest-long dance tent curated by West Coast party hosts A Club Called Rhonda.
