Vince Staples has announced his eighth studio album, Dark Times, which is out this Friday, May 24, via Def Jam Recordings. The project kicks off with the album’s first single, “Dark Times,” which is powered by a head-nodding groove with crisp drums, a meandering bass line, and drenched guitar chords.
On the cut, Staples dives into feelings of betrayal and alienation, rapping: “Beef with my closest of friends and made no amends / I’d rather kill him instead / Out of all of the rumors to spread / You pick the one that’s gon’ get us some fed timе.” Calling the cut “a personal achievement,” Staples said, “It’s me mastering some things I’ve tried before that I wasn’t great at in the beginning. It’s a testament to musical growth, song structure—all the good stuff.”
